Hedwig Crombie: Things

Things: individual characters each with their unique features and flaws

THINGS is a collection of jewellery and sculptural works based on Anglo-Celtic and Greco-Roman folklore, mythology and Paganism. Hedwig transforms characters from old prints and illustrations into wearable pieces, allowing the audience to weave their own stories around them.

I mainly use lost wax casting to create the silver pieces, shaping each piece by hand makes them all individual characters each with their unique features and flaws. In order to bring this element of individuality into the rest of the work I source material from my own collections to lend a personal element to the works, old rings are melted down and recast, broken necklaces are used to source beads, pāua shells from my family, and local beeswax for sculpting into new forms. By using these materials, these works carry an added layer of history, not only drawing from the past stories but also adding an element of my own. This exhibition explores my love of small objects and collections, shaped by years of collecting, rearranging, and admiring these unique treasures.” Hedwig Crombie, 2023

Hedwig is an early career, Naarm based artist. Hedwig studied at Whitecliffe College of Art and Design, Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland and is a graduate of RMIT University (Gold and Silversmithing), Naarm/Melbourne.
